WASHINGTON - In spite of all their success this season - a 31-0 record, a second straight DCIAA championship, the No. 1 ranking in the Washington Post - the HD Woodson Warriors came into Thursday’s DCSSA semifinal against Gonzaga with their fair share of detractors.
WASHINGTON – Nate Watson kept the Bishop O’Connell Knights within striking distance of one of the best teams in the WCAC for a half, and then his guards took over and finished to hold off the Gonzaga Eagles 69-65 for the team’s sixth consecutive victory on Wednesday.
“It feels great,” Watson said. “We wanted to beat the top WCAC teams in the league and this win means a lot to us. I think we learned today how to play with effort; today was about effort.”
WASHINGTON, DC -- It was an exciting end to the Gonzaga DC Classic on Sunday night as it took an extra period for Roman Catholic (PA) to defend its tournament title in a 77-72 overtime win over Gonzaga at American University's Bender Arena.
It seemed Gonzaga had the momentum as it scored the last five points of regulation, including a tip-in by Prentiss Hubb with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 66-66 and send it overtime.
HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- Four of the area’s top high school teams met Tuesday evening at DeMatha in the semifinals of the BSN Summer League. In the first game DeMatha beat WCAC foe St. John’s 71-52 behind strong backcourt play and a 48-point second half. In the nightcap, Gonzaga took down Coolidge 68-57 to set up a championship matchup between the Stags and the Purple Eagles on Wednesday night.
Highlights from Gonzaga's win over DeMatha in the WCAC championshp game at American University on February 26, 2015. Includes interviews with Gonzaga players Sam Miller, Chris Lykes and Bryant Crawford and head coach Steve Turner.
WASHINGTON, DC — After coming out on the wrong end of a one-sided third quarter, the Gonzaga Purple Eagles found themselves in an unenviable 10-point hole with 8 minutes remaining in Thursday’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship game at American University.
After DeMatha’s Nate Darling drilled a corner 3-pointer to open the fourth, the situation looked even more bleak.
BOWIE, MD - The 2014 summer live period came to a close with the DMVelite Team Takeover Invitational last weekend at Bowie City Gym, giving 24 teams a final opportunity to showcase themselves in front of Division I college coaches.
As we continue to wrap up the 2013-14 high school basketball season on DMVelite, we move onto our All-District selections for Washington, D.C.
Our staff would like to thank the players, coaches and fans who made this past season – our fourth year of high school coverage – a success, and we look forward to many more. In addition to this All-DC team (which features only players from schools located in the District), we'll be rolling out All-Maryland and All-Northern Virginia teams during the week.
After another exciting regular season, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference playoffs are set. The quarterfinals will take place Saturday at Gallaudet University in DC, with the semifinals and title game on Sunday and Tuesday at American University.
