2013 DMVelite Team

With the 2012-13 high school season in the books – only Montrose Christian’s participation in the upcoming ESPN NHSI remains – it’s time to recognize the DMV’s individual standouts, and with the recent merger of DMVelite and Marylandhoops.net, the process of selecting an All-Area team proved especially daunting.

The second annual DMVelite Team is the area’s most comprehensive collection, encompassing public and private school players from DC, all of Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Given such a deep pool of candidates to choose from, some tough decisions had to be made, and several talented players just missed the cut. Our staff would like to thank the players, coaches and fans who made this past season – our third of HS coverage – a success, and we look forward to many more.

NOTE: We will be releasing All-State (Md.), All-District (D.C.), and All-Region (NoVa) in the coming days, along with a full breakdown of our awards and All-Freshman and All-Small School teams.

And now, here’s our selection of the area’s best of the best – the 2013 DMVelite Team:

Maret Ends Drought

By MARCUS HELTON

WASHINGTON – Maret School has established itself as one of the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic Conference in recent years, but its failure to break through against rival Sidwell Friends had been a sore point for many of the team’s older players.

That ended Tuesday night, as the Fighting Frogs won 59-55 to snap a five-game losing skid to the Quakers behind a sizzling shooting performance from 2014 guard Steffen Davis, who made five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 21 points.

“This means a lot,” Davis said. “Since my freshman year, we’ve never beaten Sidwell. We’ve gotten really close – you know double overtime – but we’ve never been able to push through it and I think tonight that’s what we really did. So it means a lot to us, our fans and our alums and our coaches.”

North Point Sweeps WHHC

By MARCUS HELTON

WALDORF, MD – North Point 2013 point guard Marquis Wright knew he was in for a big night; he just didn’t realize how big.

Wright scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Eagles to an 83-64 win over Sidwell Friends in an anticlimactic final to the Waldorf Holiday Hoops Classic at North Point on Friday night.

The win gave North Point its third Holiday Hoops Classic title in four years. In the night’s earlier game, the North Point girls took home the event title for the first time with an 84-36 win over Westlake. Syracuse bound senior guard Tasia Butler had 22 to lead the way and scored her 1,000th career point in the victory.

Spotlight: Josh Hart

Sidwell Friends 2013 guard Josh Hart is one of the most highly-recruited players in the area, and received a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech last Friday that boosted his current offer count to 14. The versatile 6-foot-5 Hart averaged 20 points per game for Sidwell last season.

On Tuesday, DMV Elite’s Marcus Helton talked to Hart – who will play with the Team Takeover EYBL squad in Oakland this weekend – about his recruitment, goals for the summer.

DO YOU HAVE A LIST OF FAVORITES?  “I have like a top five or six, kind of around there. Those are Georgetown, N.C. State, San Diego State, Marquette, Villanova and Penn State.”
