By MARCUS HELTON

As the 2017-18 high school season gets underway, a host of familiar names will be suiting up for different teams.

This summer was as busy with movement as ever, and saw an interesting exodus of talent as several high-profile players moved to schools outside of the area. The Class of 2019 was especially hard-hit, with players such as D’Marco Baucum, Karim Coulibaly, Sherif Kenney, Marvin Price, Johnathan McGriff, Makhi Mitchell, Makhel Mitchell, Olanrewaju Olamuyiwa and Tyrese Samuel left.

WASHINGTON, DC  -- It was an exciting end to the Gonzaga DC Classic on Sunday night as it took an extra period for Roman Catholic (PA) to defend its tournament title in a 77-72 overtime win over Gonzaga at American University's Bender Arena.

It seemed Gonzaga had the momentum as it scored the last five points of regulation, including a tip-in by Prentiss Hubb with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 66-66 and send it overtime.

In a rematch of last year’s 4A South Regional Final, Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders were able to defeat Duval Tigers 26-12 and advance to its second straight 4A South Regional Final game.

This year’s game was not as close or exciting as Duval star quarterback Antoine Brooks was sidelined due to an ankle and wrist injury he suffered in a game against the Wise Pumas in October. The absence of Brooks however gave way for Roosevelt running back Karl Mofor to have a big game.

On a cool windy Fall Friday night the Wise Pumas scored 42 unanswered points on its way to a 42-8 victory against the Bowie Bulldogs on their way to a berth in the 4A Regional Finals.

“They were in tune all week to what we wanted to do, and they came out here and executed,” said Wise head coach DaLawn Parrish. “Everybody was in tune, and because of that we were able to hold a good quarterback in check.”

The Pumas got on the board early as the team drove down the field behind a heavy ground attack that ended with a CJ Rainey rushing touchdown to put the team up 7-0.
