Here’s a look at that matchups (home team listed first)
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7
12:30 PM – SUITLAND (MD) vs. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE (DC)
This game features a matchup of two the area’s most underrated guards, as 2016 wing Darryl Smith leads the Rams against 2014 Danzel Wright and National Collegiate. Wright – who averaged 22. 4 points per game last year – is one of the area’s most dynamic scorers. Suitland has several contributors playing in the Maryland 4A football state title game Friday night, but has a young nucleus that could be a factor in the PG 4A race by the end of the year.
2 PM – BOWIE (MD) vs. ARUNDEL (MD)
Bowie is led by a pair of seniors with scholarship potential in guards Dejuan Smith and Jared Gray, and has the ability to make noise in a wide-open PG 4A League. Arundel lost 8 seniors from last year’s regional finalist team, but will look to continue its recent success under coach Jeff Star with a junior-laden roster.
3:30 PM – CH FLOWERS (MD) vs. BATTLEFIELD (VA)
Tourney host Flowers squares off against a Battlefield team coming off a Virginia state quarterfinal appearance last year. The Jaguars are led by rapidly-improving 2014 forward Clint Robinson and guard Devin Shuler, while Battlefield will counter with 2014 guards Jamison Glover and Trevor Blondin and 2015 guard Kameron Hedgepeth.
5 PM – ST. MARIA GORETTI (MD) vs. WEST CHARLOTTE (NC)
Led by Notre Dame commit Martin Geben, St. Maria Goretti is coming off a runner-up performance at its Mid-Atlantic Invitational last week. This weekend they’ll face a West Charlotte team that has experienced success in its recent trips to the DMV, knocking off DeMatha and narrowly falling to Theodore Roosevelt last year. The Lions are led by 2014 point guard Trey Foster and 2014 forward Austin Harris.
6:30 PM – CLINTON CHRISTIAN (MD) vs. PROMINENCE ACADEMY (NC)
Clinton Christian - the area’s newest juggernaut – gets its first real test of the young season against a talented Prominence Academy (formerly Christian Faith) squad featuring a pair of D-I commits in St. Joseph's-bound 6-6 2014 F Markell Lodge (VIDEO) and 6-8 2014 F Stavian Allen (Liberty). Clinton Christian will counter with its own trio of D-I commitments in 2014 guards Byron Hawkins (Towson) and Jon Davis (DePaul), along with Rutgers-bound 2015 forward Leroy Butts.
8 PM – DEMATHA CATHOLIC (MD) vs. DUVAL (MD)
Saturday’s headline game features WCAC power DeMatha taking on an upset-minded DuVal team that should be in the Maryland 4A state title mix. DeMatha returns 2014 guard Corey Henson (Wagner) and highly-touted 2016’s Alani Moore and Joe Hampton, along with a pair of impact transfers in 2017 guard Darren Harvey and 2016 guard Nate Darling. The Tigers boast the area’s fastest-rising 2016 prospect in 6’6 forward AJ Wilson, and 6’5 wing Edward Polite is among the best in his class locally.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8
12 PM – CESAR CHAVEZ (DC) vs. PROMINENCE ACADEMY (NC)
Prominence’s second game will come against a small but talented and speedy Chavez team led by twin 2014 guards Tristan and Tyler Thompson and classmate Chris Baez. The Eagles have the personnel to push the pace against the larger Royals.
1:30 PM – CAPITOL CHRISTIAN (MD) vs. NEW HOPE ACADEMY (PA)
New Hope brings a squad with a trio of D-I prospects in 2016 guard Montrel Morgan, 2015 guard NaGus Griggs and 2016 wing Michael Coleman. Capitol Christian will counter with its own stable of talented guards, led by 2014’s Marcquise Reed, Malik Norfleet and 2016 Kwame Camon, with 7-footer Malik Kuwornu and 6-7 Jayln McCoy giving them a presence inside.
3 PM – NATIONAL CHRISTIAN (MD) vs. GOOD COUNSEL (MD)
The talented and youthful Eagles – they have just one senior on the roster – take on a Good Counsel squad that is looking to retool in its first year under coach Robert Churchwell, who spent last year at Benedictine (Va.). Among the matchups to watch is 6-10 NCA center Sylvester Ogbonda vs. Good Counsel’s 6-9 Shane Eberle in an old-school big man battle. NCA’s loaded 2016 class of Fred Rowles (the DMVelite/94 Feet Basketball Fall League MVP), Christian Matthews, Tim Bing and Mohammed Kabir all have D-I potential.
4:30 PM – THEODORE ROOSEVELT (DC) vs. PHILADELPHIA E&T (PA)
Led by a pair of D-I commits in point guard Johnnie Shuler (LaSalle) and forward Jibreel Faulkner (Cal State-Northridge), the Rough Riders look like the top public school team in DC. Philadelphia Electric & Technology plays in the tough Philadelphia Public League, and featured players to watch include 2015 guard Devante Truitt, 2014 point guard Larenz Thurman, 2014 forward James Suber and 2016 wing Nasir Marshburn.
6 PM – CLINTON CHRISTIAN (MD) vs. TAKOMA ACADEMY (MD)
Clinton Christian’s second game of the weekend comes against Takoma Academy, which has a new coach in Jerry McFarland. 2014 guard Charles Vines and 2015 wing Oladoyin Fadojutimi (transfer from High Point) lead the upset-minded Tigers.
