DMVelite 2016-17 Preview: Impact Transfers

By MARCUS HELTON

As the 2016-17 high school season gets underway, a host of familiar names will be suiting up for different teams.

If last year’s theme was players leaving home, this year has seen several players returning to the area, highlighted by the homecomings of standouts such as Tyler Foster, Andre Rafus and Montez Mathis.

As DMVelite kicks off its preseason coverage, here’s a look at a few of the transfers who should make an impact this year:

RELATED: 2016-17 TRANSFER LIST

Tyler Foster, 2017 Guard - South Kent (CT) to Middleburg (Va.)
A season after leaving Gilman (Md.) for South Kent, Foster [PICTURED, TOP] has returned to the area to finish out his high school career. Foster is one of biggest names on a reshuffled Middleburg Academy roster, and will be tasked with leading the Dragons, who finished as Capital Beltway Athletic Association runner-ups in their first year in the league last season.

Montez Mathis, 2018 Guard - Oak Hill (Va.) to John Carroll (Md.)
Mathis is also back after a year away from home – he spent his freshman year at Mount Carmel – and joins with Immanuel Quickley and Nate Roberts to give new coach John Zito three of the area’s top juniors.

Andre Rafus, 2017 Forward - Roselle Catholic (NJ) to Lake Clifton (Md.)
Rafus returns after a season in New Jersey that helped to boost his status as a Division I prospect. He provides a huge piece to a Lake Clifton squad that finished as Maryland 1A state runner-ups last season and will look to seal the deal this time around.

Sherif Kenney, 2019 Guard - Bishop O’Connell (Va.) to Rock Creek Christian (Md.)
After averaging 7 points per game as a freshman at O’Connell, Kenney has joined a Rock Creek team seeking to rebound from a down year last season. Coolidge transfer Will Vedder is another key addition for the Eagles.

Marvin Price, 2019 Wing – DeMatha (Md.) to Patterson (Md.)
The highly-touted Price left Baltimore to spend his freshman year at DeMatha, but is back in Baltimore City and his addition should help the Clippers make a significant postseason run.

Myles Douglas, 2017 Wing - Paul VI (Va.) to Aberdeen (Md.)
The University of Central Florida commit will finish his high school career out closer to home following a year at Paul VI. The 6-7 Douglas should make a huge impact in Harford County.

Donovann Toatley, 2018 Guard - St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) to Riverdale Baptist (Md.)
After a breakout sophomore season, the dynamic Toatley take over the point guard reigns at Riverdale following the graduation of current High Point University freshman Jamal Wright. Toatley has already made an impact, helping the Crusaders to victory in the SACS Adidas Classic in San Antonio, Texas last month.

Domenick Bailey, 2018 Guard - Christ Chapel (Va.) to St. Stephens & St. Agnes (Va.)
Last year’s DMVelite Northern Virginia Freshman of the Year has rejoined his original class following his move to the Saints. He’s got good scoring ability and should serve as a nice complement to High Point-bound senior point guard Denmark Slay.

Jalen Gabbidon, 2017 Guard - Harrisburg Academy (Pa.) to Glenelg Country (Md.)
A Yale commit, the 6-foot-5 Gabbidon arrived at Glenelg Country with a well-deserved reputation as a scorer. He averaged an eye-popping 37.2 points per game last season to lead all players - public or private - in the state of Pennsylvania, including a 60-point outing. He joins fellow D-I commitments Anthony Longpre (St. Joseph’s) and Isaiah Burnett (Navy) in an intriguing Dragons lineup.

Christian Dyches, 2017 Forward - DeMatha (Md.) to Potomac (Md.)
Dyches’ move from DeMatha to his local public school immediately gives the Wolverines a force in the middle few opponents can match. Potomac seems primed to reclaim its spot as one of the top teams in Prince George's County and make another postseason run.

Alvin Cox, 2017 Guard - Anacostia (D.C.) to Capital Christian (Md.)
Cox burst onto the varsity scene at Anacostia last year, leading the DCIAA in scoring. He’ll help to form a nice perimeter trio alongside fellow transfer Kieron Williams and returner Judah Jordan.
